St. Mary’s and Archbishop Spalding meet today in an IAAM-A conference battle
Whenever St. Mary’s and Archbishop Spalding meet in any sport people take notice. On Wednesday, the Anne Arundel County schools will meet today in an IAAM A-conference girls lax matchup.
The Saints are coming off their first winning season (14–5) in six years. St. Mary’s lost some firepower to graduation but will still have highly touted star Shelby Harrison (Johns Hopkins commit). (The senior midfielder has been a huge boost for the Baltimore Under Armour Underclass teams in recent years). Also watch for seniors Gabby Biondi (Towson) and Matilda Adams (San Diego State).
St Mary’s has hired alum Mindy Jones as the teams new head coach. Jones was a defender for the University of Maryland (‘06–08′). But before she was a Terp she helped lead the Saints to an 18–3 record and an IAAM title her senior year for coach Sue Chittim. Jones was awarded the Coach’s Award. In her Maryland Bio it says Mindy is a good leader and smart. Which is perfect for the team she’s inheriting.
As for Archbishop Spalding, the Cavaliers are coming off their first losing season (7–11) since 2012. Tara-Restly Shea’s team looks to bounce back after last season. The Cavaliers opened the season with an 8–3 victory over Maryvale Prep. Seniors Maria Kiskis (Duke) on midfield, Lillian Stump on Attack and Alison Mervine in goal (both committed to Oregon) will lead the way in 2017.
