Gilman varsity lacrosse head coach Matthews to step down after the 2019 season.
On Wednesday, sources confirmed with the Peace Report that Gilman varsity boys lacrosse coach Brooks Matthews announced that he will be stepping down after the 2019 season.
The Greyhounds leader has had a successful 15 years with the varsity program. Winning the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association title twice (‘09 and ‘11) in the ever so mighty A-conference.
“MIAA A conference lacrosse is Easily, top to bottom, the best high school lacrosse league in the country and because we played two games a week, it demands the highest levels of focus, discipline, intensity, and execution,” said Matthews in a statement emailed to PRLB. “And that is why I feel so lucky to have been a part of it for so many years as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.”
Matthews will be going out on his final season with a decent shot at making a run for the conference title this season. Gilman has a tremendous senior and junior classes and should be a force to be reckoned with.
“I feel both grateful and proud to have served the school and our players as the head coach for the last 15 years. However, as the job has evolved, the significant increase in its demands have taken me further from what I enjoy most, which is working directly with my students, advisees, and even the players. I am not leaving the school but rather looking to continue growing as a teacher in all of my roles.”
